"She openeth her mouth with wisdom,
and in her tongue is the law of kindness."
Proverbs 31:26
"A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh." Luke 6:45
The virtuous woman speaks wisdom. What kind of wisdom? There are two types of wisdom. One is knowledge (i.e. know-it-all). The Bible says of this kind of wisdom:
"...Knowledge puffeth up, but charity edifieth. And if any man think that he knoweth any thing, he knoweth nothing yet as he ought to know." 1 Corinthians 8:1b-2
"But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth. This wisdom decendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish. For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work." James 3:14-16
The Greek word tells us that the virtuous woman had the good kind of wisdom, but the latter part of the verse informs us as well. "In her tongue is the law of kindness."
"But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy. And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace." James 3:17-18
"But let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man." Colossians 4:6
I know my speech has a long way to go toward being consistently kind and wise. Too often, I succumb to the temptation of popular sarcasm, gossip, and frivolity. But there is hope! God offers heart surgery.
"If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him." James 1:5
"My son, [or daughter] if thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments with thee; So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding; Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding; If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures; Then shalt thou understand the fear of the Lord, and find the knowledge of God. For the Lord giveth wisdom: out of His mouth cometh knowledge and understanding." Proverbs 2:1-6
How is your speech?
