Doing "Nothing" or Abiding?

"Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except you abide in me. I am the vine, ye are the branches: he that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. ...Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples." John 15:4,5 & 8 There are numerous days when I just don't feel like doing anything. -Days like today. My lessons for the week are planned, dinner is leftovers, and laundry won't take that long. Today, I was truly tempted to just do nothing. Yet, as I read these comforting words of Christ (follow-up on a book I've been re-reading) this phrase jumped out at me: "for without me ye can do nothing." Oh, I CAN do nothing, and indeed, if I acted on my feelings/mood, that's what I would do: nothing. -Nothing that would bear good fruit. -Nothing of spiritual value. -Nothing that would brin...

Moments of Intention

Sometimes it seems I am simply going through the motions: I read my Bible, but can't concentrate with the many interruptions. Does it really make a difference? I think so. (Matthew 6:23) It is the heart that chooses to read God's Word, despite distractions, that God desires. The moments of prayer throughout the day- they seem to lack intimacy; yet at the same time, they reveal an awareness of the Presence of God in my life. As a mom of two toddlers, I am busy full time. Some days its seems my time is ruled by the immediate necessities that crop up having babies: picking up toys, cleaning messes, dealing with attitudes, playing cop/umpire, and so forth. Yet, even those days I have moments. Being a mom makes serving God manifest in different ways. I must still be first and foremost, a daughter of the King. Get Life!

Have you ever heard someone say "Get a life!"? This is usually meant as an insult, saying that we don't value current culture or relationships or events as we should. This year, I desire to reclaim more of life. In life, it is so easy to let things slide, so we constantly must hold ourselves to checks. Living in the midst of ministry, we are constantly evaluating. Are we doing what should be done? What should we keep the same, what should we do differently? How can we reach more people? How can we engage the people we already know? These are great and necessary questions. However, it is just a step from evaluating our ministry through the lens of God and His Word, and judging our life by the people we are trying to reach and our peers. What does God call us to? Faithful obedience. This done, the rest is "extra" so to speak: it is fruit to our account, but not of our effort. We can't make fruit appear.
