Name Above
All Names
“Let this mind be in
you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it
not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took
upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being
found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death,
even the death of the cross. Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and
given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every
knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the
earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the
glory of God the Father.”
Philippians 2:5-11
What
does your name mean? Mine means “beautiful
pilgrim.” Names are important. They give
a short description of the person to whom they are attached, perhaps a virtue
or a personality feature, or even a vice. Often, a child that is given a name
at birth will live up to their name- good or bad. -Perhaps that’s why I like to
travel so much. ;)
Mary means
sea of bitterness. Biblically
speaking, you can see how this name evolved in the first chapter of the book of
Ruth, when Naomi requests to be called by the name “Mara” instead of Naomi.
Baal
means lord. This is the god of the
Canaanites, Phoenicians, Babylonians, etc. in O. T. times. You may see it
listed with another name, to tell you what that god lorded over, as in Baal-Gad
(god of fortune); or in the plural,
as in Baalim.
Buddha
means enlightened one, rooted from
the actual ancient Chinese prophet. (Though in his case, I don’t think it was a
good angel that enlightened him.)
God the
Almighty said that HIS name is above every other name. Since a name is an
attribute, a virtue, or a description of a person, in a roundabout way He’s
saying, HE is above every person on earth. Better, stronger, bigger, and more
important. Anything you can do, He can do better. The whole world revolves
around Him.
And that’s
the way it should be.
He IS
the God of the universe. First of all, He existed before the world. Then, He
made everything we know to be. He desired friendship, so He formed mankind. He
created time, and He planned the END. You and I are part of His gigantic play
to bring honor and glory to Himself. He ALONE is above all.
“And every creature which is in heaven, and on the
earth, and under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that are in
them, heard I saying, Blessing, and honour, and glory, and power, be unto him
that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever and ever.”
Revelation 5:13
