Ah! The thrill that goes up my back as I open the box on the counter. It is! My new Bible! I had recently given my Spanish-English Bible to someone who had a greater need of it, and the Bible I was currently using was hard to read. My Bible is like my journal, and I like being able to write in the margins, reference special verses, and underline passages, so I had made sure I got a new Bible that would enable me to do this. You know, it is such a blessing to be able to order a Bible and use it freely in this country. Not everyone has that privilege.
While I was serving in Mexico, our team went for a bus ride. (We did them for ministry, not to get anywhere.) The girl who sat next to me looked to be about seven. I greeted her in Spanish, chatted with her for a few moments, and then delved into the gospel. She did not receive Christ, but was very excited. When I asked her how old she was, she said "I am seven, today." "Why happy birthday!" I replied. Then I proceeded to give her a Spanish New Testament for her birthday. Smiling from ear to ear, the girl clutched the Bible to her chest, and turned to her parents. "Look, she gave me a Bible!"
Mexico is a Catholic country, and many of the people do not have a way to get a Bible. I was reminded of this when I gave my Spanish-English Bible to a new Spanish member of our church. He asked where to get more so that he could send some to his family. What a privilege it is in America to have the freedom of having not one, not two, but as many Bibles as we please!
Thank you Lord, for this freedom. May I see it as a gift from God and an opportunity which I should share with others.
